Pastime Pleasures #20 – Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman

Welcome to my  feature, Pastime Pleasures, posted every other Friday. Today is the turn of Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman. Here I will look at books that have given me great pleasure in the past. These are books I can read over and over again. The only rule is that the book must have been published five or more years ago. N.B. For scheduling reasons I am posting this today, rather than Friday. It’s only one day different! I’m not even sure how I begin to describe how good Noughts and Crosses is as a book. I read it when it first came out and now over ten years on, the rush of emotions and the impact I feel when I read it still has not changed. Callum is white, he is a Nought and is therefore a second-class citizen, Sephy is black, she is a Cross, and is therefore part of the ruling class. The divide between these two classes is deep and there are strict separation policies in place. But Sephy and Callum are in love and will […]

For those who haven’t yet read Written in the Blood, please can you explain the premise of the book. And why they should be reading it! Guest Post: Q&A with Clare Dowling, author of A Special Delivery

Today I am delighted to be part of the blog tour for the brilliant A Special Delivery by Clare Dowling. And today I have a Q&A with Clare Dowling. I loved this book and can’t recommend it warmly enough (see my review)  Below Claire has very kindly asnwered some my questions. Don’t forget to check out other blogs for some more exclusive content! Q&A with Clare Dowling: Where did you get the idea for A Special Delivery? It was coming up to Christmas and we were driving past a house that had gone to town on the Christmas decorations – flashing lights, fakes Santas, a big nativity scene in the garden.  It looked like the happiest house in town.  But I began to wonder what if the opposite was true, and the crazy Christmas display was to hide a lot of misery?  And that’s where the story of the Brady family in A Special Delivery began. A Special Delivery is your tenth book! Do you think your writing style has changed? Do you think that it is easier to write now? No – […]
