War-torn Germany. Four young people. Four dark secrets.
They come from different lands but each of them is hunted, and haunted, by tragedy, lies … and war.
As thousands of refugees flock to the coast, desperate to escape the advancing Red Army, the paths of four young people converge. All are hoping to board the Wilhelm Gustloff, a ship that promises safety and freedom.
Yet not all promises can be kept.
Inspired by the worst disaster in maritime history, Ruta Sepetys, award-winning author of Between Shades of Gray, brilliantly tells a shocking, illuminating and ultimately life-affirming story from World War II.

So I decided to read Salt to the Sea based on the numerous positive reviews I had read. And the fact that is based on a real event, which always makes a book interesting and I get to learn something new!

However I started off not really liking this book. But then it became gripping and moving and emotionally draining. I was swept up and there was no life boat for me. I was hooked and found it impossible to put down.  And I can’t really say or point out the moment that my opinion was changed but it was rapid, and from that moment I fell in love with this book.

The story is split between four characters. All who have their own distinct voices, it was so easy to know who was telling the story. Alfred’s voice always made me feel nauseated and like the other characters I wanted to slap him. Joana always made me feel strong. While I wanted to protect Emilia and Florian I wanted to succeed.

I would definitely recommend Salt to the Sea if you are a fan of historical fiction, as it has all the right elements, fascinating characters, a gripping story and more tension than you can shake a stick at. One for all ages.
