Q&A with Louise Welsh, author of No Dominion

On the blog today I have a Q&A with Louise Welsh, author of No Dominion. I reviewed her book a couple of days ago,The fast paced adventure in the final book of The Plague Times Trilogy was so hard to put down and was written be a brilliant author.

Don’t believe me? Check out the answers below!

Can you in five words describe your book to those who haven’t read it?

Fast, jeopardy, thrill-ride, violent, love

Was there anything in this book that took you by surprise?

I was surprised how long it took me to write! I was six months late in completing No Dominion. The world around me kept on changing. Like most dystopian fictions this is a book with a strong connection to the time in which it was written, so it had to change too.

Do you have a favourite moment in the book?

I enjoyed writing it all, but perhaps the final chapter is my favourite. It was satisfying to tie the trilogy together in the final pages of the last book.

Name the best book you have read in the last year, your favourite book and the book that is currently at the top of your TBR.

I have so many favourite books it is hard to choose, but I am going to pick James Hogg’s Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner It is a brilliant and perplexing, shape-changing novel full of mystery, humour and bad deeds.

Can you tell us a little bit about what you are working on at the moment?

I am working on a new libretto for an opera commissioned by Scottish Opera. The composer is my friend Stuart MacRae. This is our fourth opera together and it should hit the stage in 2018. After that I will begin to think about a new novel.

Because this is dystopian, how did you decide which bits of society to keep and which to remove?

I tried to imagine what would re-establish if modern infrastructures and technology disappeared. On their journey Magnus and Stevie encounter feudalism, anarchy and authoritarianism. They also encounter kindness, love and sacrifice

Did you do any research? Or did anything influenced you?

I was influenced by years of reading dystopian fiction and two great TV shows from the 1970s. Terry Nation’s Survivors and Barry Hines Threads.

Can you give any advice for those wanting to write?

My advice to new writers is simple, apply your bottom to the chair and write! Do not listen t that little voice in your head that says you are not good enough to be a writer. If you don’t try, you won’t have a chance. Edit hard and read, read, read.

What do you think of my Q&A with Louise Welsh, author of No Dominion? Are there any other questions you would have asked?
