Introducing: Movie Musical Challenge 2017

Last Year I participated in Bookish Whimsy Movie Musical Challenge. This year I’ve decided to do another Movie Musical Challenge 2017. This time the 25 AFI’s Greatest Musicals of all Times! The Challenge is 25 Musicals in 12 months. Which should be really easy. Fingers crossed. Some of these I have already seen. But in honour of the challenge I am watching them ALL OVER AGAIN. Fingers crossed that this year I can watch a whole load of musicals. The Plan: I’m not going to watch these movies in any particular order, but each one I watch I will review. The plan is to watch at least two a month. Warp up in December where I will reorder the top 25 into my own list of top 25.   The AFI’s Top 25 Movie Musical List: Singin’ in the Rain (1952) West Side Story (1961) The Wizard of Oz (1939) The Sound of Music (1965) Cabaret (1972) Mary Poppins (1964) A Star Is Born (1954) My Fair Lady (1964) An American in Paris (1951) Meet Me in St. Louis (1944) The […]

Movie Musical Challenge – West Side Story

For this Movie Musical Challenge I’ve made a list of 15 musicals that I haven’t yet seen and probably ought to have. The challenge is throughout the year and once watched I’ll put my thoughts up on the blog. Today’s is West Side Story.   So the thirteen movie for the challenge is West Side Story (1961), starring Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Russ Tamblyn, Rita Moreno, and George Chakiris. For once we have a musical with a serious undertone. Because despite the the pretty dancing and the high notes, this is a film about gang warfare, racial dispute and crime. ‘Tonight’, ‘America’ and ‘I Feel Pretty’ are my three favourite songs in this musical but I did enjoy listening to all the music. Each song shows of the talent and skills of the cast and story, while keeping the whimsical nature of a classic musical. West Side Story was an atmospheric and addictive watch. With its dazzling choreography and mesmerising scenes this is a musical that is unforgettable with every way. Movie Musical Challenge – Chicago

For this Movie Musical Challenge I’ve made a list of 15 musicals that I haven’t yet seen and probably ought to have. The challenge is throughout the year and once watched I’ll put my thoughts up on the blog. Today its the turn of Chicago. So the twelfth movie for the challenge is Chicago (2002), starring stars Catherine Zeta-Jones, Renée Zellweger and Richard Gere. Despite never watching this film before I know the songs extremely well. I have the film soundtrack on my Ipod and regularly play the album from beginning to end because the songs are easy to sing along to and even without speak you still get a sense of the story. I honestly love ever song in this show but I guess the classic/favourite include: ‘All that Jazz’, ‘Cell Block Tango’ and ‘Razzle Dazzle’, but all the songs are incredibly catchy so each to their own. This is an energetic and enthusiastic musical that will get your feet stomping and leave you dazzled with the spectacle. Movie Musical Challenge – Singin’ In The Rain

For this Movie Musical Challenge I’ve made a list of 15 musicals that I haven’t yet seen and probably ought to have. The challenge is throughout the year and once watched I’ll put my thoughts up on the blog. Today’s is the turn of Singin’ In The Rain.   So the eleventh movie for the challenge is Singin’ In The Rain (1952), starring  Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor and Debbie Reynolds. This is a lighthearted and fun deception of Hollywood in the 1920s during the transition from silent pictures to ‘talkies’. Resulting in some hilarious situations and causing some of the dilemmas in the film. All the songs here are pretty beautiful but my favourites were ‘Singin’ In The Rain’ (obviously), ‘Make ‘Em Laugh’ and ‘All I Do Is Dream of You’. The dancing in this movie is also pretty special and it is hard to imagine that Debbie Reynolds was not really considered a dancer. I thought she kept up with Gene Kelly quite well. Despite its age this musical still remains as ‘fresh’ and exciting as when it was first shown. This is definitely my new favourite […]

Movie Musical Challenge – White Christmas

For this Movie Musical Challenge I’ve made a list of 15 musicals that I haven’t yet seen and probably ought to have. The challenge is throughout the year and once watched I’ll put my thoughts up on the blog. Today is the turn of White Christmas. So the eleventh movie for the challenge is White Christmas (1954), starring Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, and Vera-Ellen. Some of my favourite songs include ‘White Christmas’, ‘Sisters’, ‘Gee I Wish I Was Back in the Army’ and ‘The Best Things Happen While You’re Dancing’. At first when I started watching I did wonder why people said this film was so good, it didn’t grab me, in fact it very much bored me. But after about 30mins the film hit me with its goodness. There is something simplistically wonderful and magical about this movie, that proves anything can be done if you put your mind to it. This is the perfect Chrismassy musical to watch with all the family due to the silly capers and laughs along the way. Subscribe to Blog via Email Enter your email address to […]
