Movie Musical Challenge – Meet Me In St. Louis

For this Movie Musical Challenge I’ve made a list of 15 musicals that I haven’t yet seen and probably ought to have. The challenge is throughout the year and once watched I’ll put my thoughts up on the blog. Today is the turn of Meet Me In St Louis. So the tenth movie for the challenge is Meet Me In St Louis (1944), starring Judy Garland. Some of my favourite songs were “The Trolley Song”, “The Boy Next Door”, and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”, but every song was brilliant as each one made me want to hum along and repeat again and again. There is a quaint and nostalgic look at a time of innocence and optimism when something such as the World Fair coming to your town is the most exciting thing to happen. Set in four acts from the summer of 1903 and spring of 1904, we follow the Smith sisters as they go through rites of passage and changes as each comes to their own. This was a gorgeous, quintessential film and is definitely in my top three musicals of the year. Subscribe to […]

Movie Musical Challenge – Kiss Me Kate

For this Movie Musical Challenge I’ve made a list of 15 musicals that I haven’t yet seen and probably ought to have. The challenge is throughout the year and once watched I’ll put my thoughts up on the blog. Today is the turn of Kiss Me Kate.   So the eight movie for the challenge is Kiss Me Kate (1953), starring Kathryn Grayson and Howard Keel. I felt a bit funny about the romance between Fred and Lilli because I felt that they hadn’t worked through their issues but perhaps it helps that it was pretty obvious that Fred was still in love with Lilli and the reason for their divorce was something trivial. To be honest I’m not sure that I had a favourite song – Too Darn Hot, Brush Up Your Shakespeare and I Hate Men are probably the best but there was nothing that stood with me. The standout for me was Ann Miller and her dancing. She was the highlight of the film and made me just want to get up and start tap dancing. This is probably my least favourite musical that I have watched so […]

Movie Musical Challenge – Easter Parade

For this Movie Musical Challenge I’ve made a list of 15 musicals that I haven’t yet seen and probably ought to have. The challenge is throughout the year and once watched I’ll put my thoughts up on the blog. Today is the turn of Easter Parade.   So the seventh movie for the challenge is Easter Parade (1948), starring Fred Astaire and Judy Garland. There are so many wonderful songs that its hard to pick a favourite. But some include, A Fella with an Umbrella, A Couple of Swells and It Only Happens When I Dance With You. Despite the title of this musical, there isn’t much time spent on the ‘Easter Parade’. But this is a light, whimsical and entertaining musical showcasing the talent of Astaire and Garland. With great support from Ann Miller and Peter Crawford. This may not be the best musical that Astaire and Garland has ever done but its simplicity and easy sing a long songs makes it a classic that should not be missed. This is an appealing musical with standout dance routines and fantastic songs that you just want to try out long […]

Movie Musical Challenge – Oklahoma!

For this Movie Musical Challenge I’ve made a list of 15 musicals that I haven’t yet seen and probably ought to have. The challenge is throughout the year and once watched I’ll put my thoughts up on the blog. Today is the turn of Oklahoma! So the sixth movie for the challenge is the gorgeous Oklahoma! (1955), starring Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones. Despite romance being the heart of this film, there are some extremely dark elements (Curly while singing seems to encourage Jud to commit suicide and everyone is quite dismissive of Jud). And the ballet dream scene seems to empathise this feeling. Gorgeous songs from this musical include: Oh What a Beautiful Mornin’, The Surrey with the Fringe on Top, Many a New Day and The Farmer and the Cowman. All the songs were uplifting and had a catchy beat and are really easy to hum along to long after the film is over. This was a fantastic musical, that was bold and daring in its attempts to not portray a happy go lucky musical but also show a dark side. And show that not everything is prim and […]

Movie Musical Challenge – Seven Brides for Seven Brothers

For this Movie Musical Challenge I’ve made a list of 15 musicals that I haven’t yet seen and probably ought to have. The challenge is throughout the year and once watched I’ll put my thoughts up on the blog. Today is the turn of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.   So the fifth movie for the challenge is the gorgeous Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954), starring Howard Keel and Jane Powell.  This was a fantastic film to watch and from the start my feet were tapping and I just wanted to sing along. I loved all the music, but my favourite include: Bless Your Beautiful Hide; Sobbin’ Women; June Bride and Spring, Spring, Spring. But it is not just the music that make this film so good. It is also the dancing. The Barn Raising scene in particular is spectacular as the brothers dance and do acrobatics and balancing acts in an attempt to win over the girls. When listening to the actual lyrics of the songs they are quite inappropriate. But it doesn’t really matter as you will feel inspired and want to sing along. An infectious, show-stopper of a film […]
