Pastime Pleasures #33 – Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J K Rowling

Welcome to my feature, Pastime Pleasures all about books I have loved and adored and were published over five years.  Today is the turn of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J K Rowling. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire has to be my favourite Harry Potter out of the whole series. It is the pivotal point in the Harry Potters and a complete game changer. Goblet of Fire is the starting point for Harry and co to grow up. Before Harry’s adventures were limited to in-school activities. And Voldermort is still a shadow of himself. And it is now all going to change. Because now that he is back. There is a lot of Quidditch, adventure and thrills. As Harry races to the end of the Triwizard cup and starts to realise that he is a teenager. The fact that Harry and co are growing up lead to some hilarious moments as hormones take the better of them. And we get to learn about other schools. I loved that we finally get to know so much more about […]

Pastime Pleasures #32 – Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J K Rowling

Welcome to my feature, Pastime Pleasures all about books I have loved and adored and were published over five years.  Today is the turn of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J K Rowling. When I first read this book I wasn’t a huge fan. Harry Potter was so much better than this! But over the years as my love for all things Harry Potter have grown so have my feeling for this little book. Because after this book the Harry Potter books double in size.  Also can I mention Crookshanks?! He is like a secret ninja secret spy agent cat. He knows what is happening and doesn’t get the credit he deserves. While Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban was never my favourite in terms of magic and adventure. It is still a great book and essential to the series. Basically our wizarding world is expanded. We get to know about an all magical wizard village, sweets with really cool names and a big history lesson. And then there is the time-turner. It would literally give me all the time in the world to go […]

Pastime Pleasures #31 – Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer

My feature, Pastime Pleasures is finally back after a long absence! Today is the turn of Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer. I’m not sure it will be posted as regularly as before but it is good to have this feature back and to share books that have given me joy in the past. As before the book must have been published five years ago. I loved this book as a child, but it is only recently that I managed to read the entire series, I think I only got to book four before deciding I was too old to read such nonsense. How foolish was I? This is a book that you just have to take it as it is. A good fun, silly caper that involves fairies. And yes you did read that correctly. As a kid this was a gripping story about 12 year old who basically got away with EVERYTHING. What kid would not want that? And while he is a clever, cocky thing you can’t help but root for him, despite the snarky comments and the issue of whether or not […]

Pastime Pleasures #30 – The Magicians’ Guild by Trudi Canavan

My feature, Pastime Pleasures is finally back after a long absence! Today is the turn of The Magicians’ Guild by Trudi Canavan. I’m not sure it will be posted as regularly as before but it is good to have this feature back and to share books that have given me joy in the past. As before the book must have been published five years ago. This is always a joy to read and it is so so easy to read this series one book after the other with no pause for anything else. The Magicians Guild is a book that is impossible to put down and from the moment you start this book you will be engulfed in the world. From the moment Soena finds out she has magic until the very end, every moment can be imagined and every moment is magical. While not stuffed with action, this is a book that is pretty exciting and makes it hard to put down. Add to that multiple characters to love and cherish, relationships to believe in and truth to be uncovered. […]

Pastime Pleasures #29 – The Valley of Adventure by Enid Blyton

Welcome to my  feature, Pastime Pleasures, posted every other Friday. Today is the turn of The Valley of Adventure by Enid Blyton. Here I will look at books that have given me great pleasure in the past. These are books I can read over and over again. The only rule is that the book must have been published five or more years ago. Based on the fact that the spine of this book is the most damaged in this series I have had to conclude that it is my favourite book! And what is there not to love – four children on on their own having an adventure with a parrot – Kiki who is hilarious. I mean Diana, Philip, Jack and Lucy could survive a few days without adult supervision and in my child-brain it was perfectly reasonable that I could too. The Valley of Adventure was an inspiring and exciting book from my childhood, and one that I still read now if I want something comforting. I mean the children (because that is what they are) do clever and […]
