When East Coast native Elizabeth receives her freshman year roommate assignment, she shoots off an e-mail to coordinate the basics: television, microwave, mini-fridge. That first note to San Franciscan Lauren sparks a series of e-mails that alters the landscape of each girl’s summer—and raises questions about how two girls who are so different will ever share a dorm room. As the countdown to college begins, life at home becomes increasingly complex. With family relationships and childhood friendships strained by change, it suddenly seems that the only people Elizabeth and Lauren can rely on are the complicated new boys in their lives . . . and each other. Even though they’ve never met. As an ex-student […]

Pastime Pleasures #17 – Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J K Rowling

Welcome to my  feature, Pastime Pleasures, posted every other Friday. Today is the turn of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J K Rowling. Here I will look at books that have given me great pleasure in the past. These are books I can read over and over again. The only rule is that the book must have been published five or more years ago. The second of the series starts of with a flying bang… literally. The Chamber of Secrets is another brilliant installment of the Harry Potter Series. Perhaps Chamber of Secrets is so good because we have got to know the characters, we know who our favourites are, who we dislike, and it is easier to imagine Harry’s surroundings. Harry clearly has a better understanding of his abilities and who is enemies are. And this book focuses on improving said abilites and growing as a character, there is more focus on the mystery at hand rather than the future. Perhaps it is the re-reading that has made me see how good J. K. Rowling is at […]

This special paperback edition also includes the prequel novella DAIMON. The Hematoi descend from the unions of gods and mortals, and the children of two Hematoi – pure-bloods – have godlike powers. Children of Hematoi and mortals – well, not so much. Half-bloods only have two options: become trained Sentinels who hunt and kill daimons or become servants in the homes of the pures. Seventeen-year-old Alexandria would rather risk her life fighting than waste it scrubbing toilets, but she may end up slumming […]

Review: Apple and Rain by Sarah Crossan

I received this book for free from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.Apple and Rain by Sarah Crossan Published by Bloomsbury Publishing on September 1, 2015 Genres: Contemporary, Fiction, Young Adult Pages: 330 Format: E-Arc Source: Netgalley Buy on Amazon Goodreads When Apple’s mother returns after eleven years away, Apple feels whole again. But just like the stormy Christmas Eve when she left, her mother’s homecoming is bittersweet. It’s only when Apple meets someone more lost than she is that she begins to see things as they really are. A story about sad endings.A story about happy beginnings.A story to make you realise who is special. Apple and Rain is a hybrid of Cathy Cassidy and Jacqueline Wilson is, perhaps, the best description you could even give this book. Filled with the tragedy/harsh circumstances, and a yearning a hope to improve life, this is a bitter-sweet book. Apple has a stong and compelling voice. There are times when she sounds wiser and more experienced […]
