Book vs. Film – Me Before You

Be warned! Spoilers may occur! Me Before You is a story that leans heavily on emotional connection, so whether the book or the film works better really depends on how much time you want to spend inside the characters’ heads versus simply feeling the moment. The Book The novel allows the story to unfold slowly, which gives Lou’s personal growth real weight. Being inside her thoughts makes her awkwardness, hopefulness, and uncertainty feel genuine rather than exaggerated. Her relationship with Will develops in small, meaningful steps, and those moments add up. Will’s perspective is also more complex in the book. His anger, humor, and stubbornness are balanced in a way that makes his final decision heartbreaking but understandable, even if you don’t agree with it. The ethical questions around assisted dying feel heavier on the page because the book gives them room to breathe. While the pacing drags a little in the middle, that slower pace reflects how stuck Lou feels in her own life, which ultimately makes her growth more satisfying. The Film The film is emotionally effective and […]

Monthly Round-up! November 2016

Monthly Round-up, linking everything that has happened in the last month, posted on the last day of said month. This Round-up November 2016. Currently reading:   Reviews:   Through the Letterbox:   Challenges: A new year and a new challenge. This year I am participating in the movie musical challenge hosted by Bookish Whimsy.  This month I reviewed  an incredible 4 musicals – including the divine Meet Me In St. Louis, the charismatic Easter Parade, the moving Oklahoma! and finally Kiss Me Kate. As per usual I’m participating in the Goodreads Challenge. I’ve pledged to read 100 books! And so far have managed to read 75 books. I’m 6 behind which is terrible and I’m not sure how I will recover. But this is a small improvement on last month so keep your fingers crossed for me that I can keep going! So what do you think of my round-up November 2016? What have you read this month? Book vs. Film: How I Live Now

Book vs. Film: How I Live Now

Today’s post for Book vs Film  focuses on How I Live Now. On this occasion I will briefly review both film and book before giving my opinion on which is better. Read and let me know if I am correct in my assessment.   Be warned! Spoilers may occur! The Book: I adore this book. When I first read it in 2004 I wasn’t exactly enamored with the book.  But over the years this book has grown on me to become a firm classic of my childhood reading. The major theme of the book is survival-ship and how love can conquer all, war, separation and expectations. And I thought it showed the confusion of war really well. It’s not clear who the enemy is or what their motive is. I liked that the book is told from Daisy’s perspective, what she knows we know everything else is lost to us. So we do only get half the picture but that is the only picture that matters here. The writing is puzzling and limited, but this is necessary due to what is going on. Despite […]
