For this Movie Musical Challenge I’ve made a list of 15 musicals that I haven’t yet seen and probably ought to have. The challenge is throughout the year and once watched I’ll put my thoughts up on the blog. Today is the turn of Oklahoma!
So the sixth movie for the challenge is the gorgeous Oklahoma! (1955), starring Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones.
Despite romance being the heart of this film, there are some extremely dark elements (Curly while singing seems to encourage Jud to commit suicide and everyone is quite dismissive of Jud). And the ballet dream scene seems to empathise this feeling.
Gorgeous songs from this musical include: Oh What a Beautiful Mornin’, The Surrey with the Fringe on Top, Many a New Day and The Farmer and the Cowman. All the songs were uplifting and had a catchy beat and are really easy to hum along to long after the film is over.
This was a fantastic musical, that was bold and daring in its attempts to not portray a happy go lucky musical but also show a dark side. And show that not everything is prim and proper…
Oklahoma’s infectious charm will have you hollering and thigh-slapping in no time.
