Pastime Pleasures #31 – Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer

My feature, Pastime Pleasures is finally back after a long absence! Today is the turn of Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer. I’m not sure it will be posted as regularly as before but it is good to have this feature back and to share books that have given me joy in the past. As before the book must have been published five years ago. I loved this book as a child, but it is only recently that I managed to read the entire series, I think I only got to book four before deciding I was too old to read such nonsense. How foolish was I? This is a book that you just have to take it as it is. A good fun, silly caper that involves fairies. And yes you did read that correctly. As a kid this was a gripping story about 12 year old who basically got away with EVERYTHING. What kid would not want that? And while he is a clever, cocky thing you can’t help but root for him, despite the snarky comments and the issue of whether or not […]

Pastime Pleasures #30 – The Magicians’ Guild by Trudi Canavan

My feature, Pastime Pleasures is finally back after a long absence! Today is the turn of The Magicians’ Guild by Trudi Canavan. I’m not sure it will be posted as regularly as before but it is good to have this feature back and to share books that have given me joy in the past. As before the book must have been published five years ago. This is always a joy to read and it is so so easy to read this series one book after the other with no pause for anything else. The Magicians Guild is a book that is impossible to put down and from the moment you start this book you will be engulfed in the world. From the moment Soena finds out she has magic until the very end, every moment can be imagined and every moment is magical. While not stuffed with action, this is a book that is pretty exciting and makes it hard to put down. Add to that multiple characters to love and cherish, relationships to believe in and truth to be uncovered. […]

Pastime Pleasures #27 – Things I want my Daughters to Know by Elizabeth Noble

Welcome to my  feature, Pastime Pleasures, posted every other Friday. Today is the turn of Things I want my Daughters to Know by Elizabeth Noble. Here I will look at books that have given me great pleasure in the past. These are books I can read over and over again. The only rule is that the book must have been published five or more years ago. Barbara’s daughters are devastated to lose their mum, but then Barbara has sent them letters. Will these letters give the girls comfort? Will their be able to come together as a family and mourn their mother properly? And finally will they be set free from their burden in order to live their lives free? Things I want My Daughters to Know  shows the different relationships a parent can have with their children as each has different personalities. It shows how together yet how far apart a family can be. How each can grieve in their own way.  It is about the bonds between siblings and families. This is a sweet, caring book, without being too over-emotional […]

Pastime Pleasures #26- A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett

Welcome to my  feature, Pastime Pleasures, posted every other Friday. Today is the turn of A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Here I will look at books that have given me great pleasure in the past. These are books I can read over and over again. The only rule is that the book must have been published five or more years ago. A Little Princess was not only one of my favourite books growing up but also one of my favourite films. This is heart-warming as well as being heart-breaking at the same time, and it is so beautifully written that you cannot help but believe. Sara’s way in believing in magic is so strong that you cannot help but be sucked in. There is a heroine to root for and a hero to hate. There is hope and lost and pure joy. Sara is a a kind girl, who should really be extremely spoilt. She is kind to those less fortunate than herself and does her best to be generous to everyone. Even if she doesn’t particularly like them. […]
