Pastime Pleasures #25- Can You Keep a Secret by Sophie Kinsella

Welcome to my  feature, Pastime Pleasures, posted every other Friday. Today is the turn of Can You Keep a Secret by Sophie Kinsella. Here I will look at books that have given me great pleasure in the past. These are books I can read over and over again. The only rule is that the book must have been published five or more years ago. This is a hilarious and witty read that will leave you in stitches! Perhaps best to not read it on public transport as you will laugh out loud. It is extremely difficult to maintain a straight face when reading this book. I think I went round with a permanent grin on my face, occasionally chuckling to myself, quite loudly…. There is so much humour, romance, drama, decision-making and so may secrets crammed into this book, that it is extremely hard to find a favourite part. There are also some extremely funny and outrageous characters – Jemima(!) an extremely loveable but clueless heroine, a sexy sounding love interest and some important life lessons to be learnt. This for me […]

Pastime Pleasures #24 – The Ruby in the Smoke by Philip Pullman

Welcome to my  feature, Pastime Pleasures, posted every other Friday. Today is the turn of The Ruby in the Smoke by Philip Pullman. Here I will look at books that have given me great pleasure in the past. These are books I can read over and over again. The only rule is that the book must have been published five or more years ago.   Sally is sixteen, an orphan and for the time has had a most unusual education and upbringing. After her father drowns in suspicious circumstances in the south China sea, Sally finds herself in grave danger. And to make matters worse Sally only has one living relation, an extremely scornful aunt, and due to her father’s complicated will, her inheritance is a little less than what she was expecting. And then what is Sally meant to do with the anonymous misspelled note sent to her in the post. What on earth could “Sali beware of the seven blessings. Marchbanks will help chattum. Bware darling.” possibly mean? Sally is a resourceful, intelligent and independent person, who manges to […]

Monthly Round-up! December 2014

Monthly Round-up, linking everything that has happened in the last month, posted on the last day of said month. This Round-up December 2014. I hope you all had a good Christmas and that Santa brought you everything you wanted :). I had a house full with my family bringing their dogs, chickens and a horse! Yes you did read that correctly. It is strange to think that tomorrow will be another year. I hope you all have your new year resolutions 😉 Bookish or otherwise. With a new year means that I will have to remember writing 2015 instead of 2014, something that normally takes until the middle of the year. With a new year there is new goals and aspirations to achieve. Luckily this year I achieved my Goodreads goal of 110 books and managed to read 112 overall. This year I’m going to set the goal low at 50 books. I’m about to hit exam period and so I don’t want the pressure of goals to distract me. This year I may be quieter on the blog, at […]

Pastime Pleasures #23 – Jamaica Inn by Daphne Du Maurier

Welcome to my  feature, Pastime Pleasures, posted every other Friday. Today is the turn of Jamaica Inn by Daphne Du Maurier. Here I will look at books that have given me great pleasure in the past. These are books I can read over and over again. The only rule is that the book must have been published five or more years ago. Mary Yellen arrives at Jamaica Inn to live with her Aunt and Uncle who have many secrets. Jamaica Inn is decrepit, with no guests, set in the wild and treacherous moors. There are smugglers, a horse thief, an albino vicar and a murder to solve. This book may start off slow but as the tension and suspense slowly builds up, more and more secrets are revealed. The tension and sense of foreboding are emphasized through Du Maurier’s use of the landscape surrounding Jamaica Inn. Mary may not be sure of what is happening at the beginning but soon her innocence is swept away as she gets more sucked into life at the Inn and the ramifications living there has. “Because I […]

Pastime Pleasures #22 – The Ex-Boyfriend’s Handbook by Matt Dunn

Welcome to my  feature, Pastime Pleasures, posted every other Friday. Today is the turn of The Ex-Boyfriend’s Handbook by Matt Dunn. Here I will look at books that have given me great pleasure in the past. These are books I can read over and over again. The only rule is that the book must have been published five or more years ago. This was the first chick-lit book I ever read that was from a guy’s perspective. Normally you have the girl doing whatever it takes to get the guy back but here the roles are reversed. Jane has left Edward. She has gone off to Tibet leaving him with an empty flat and three months to improve himself. So Edward embarks on a journey to improve himself, to see if he has any aspirations or goals and, perhaps most importantly, to lose weight.  It is a lot to ask for in such a short space of time. But with his personal trainer cheering him on,  Edward has even more reason to succeed. Can he do all this in three months? Will […]
